Alden is a small community in Michigan, a state in the United States. It is located in Antrim County, right on the beautiful shores of Torch Lake. Alden is known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government, but it's part of a larger area called Helena Township.

Alden is also a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means the government keeps track of its population and boundaries for official records, like the census. In 2020, about 123 people lived there.

Alden's Early Days

Alden's story began around 1868. A store owner named F. J. Lewis was one of the first people to settle here. He first called the settlement "Noble." The community grew near Spencer Creek, which flows into Torch Lake. This creek was named after a person called John Spencer. Because of the creek, the community also became known as "Spencer Creek." It even got its own post office with that name on June 15, 1869.

How Alden Got Its Name

In 1891, a railroad company called the Pere Marquette Railway built tracks into the area. Because of the railroad's arrival, Spencer Creek was renamed Alden. It was named after a railroad official named William Alden Smith. He later became an important politician in the state. The post office officially changed its name to Alden on July 18, 1892.

For the first time, in the 2010 census, Alden was officially listed as a "census-designated place." This gave it clear boundaries and official population numbers.

Alden's Location
