Alder Creek Valley is known for a sad event in American history. In November 1846, a group of pioneers called the Donner Party was traveling west. They were trying to reach California. However, heavy snow stopped them right here in Alder Creek Valley. They were forced to set up camp for the winter.
Remembering the Donner Party
Today, you can visit a special memorial in Alder Creek Valley. It honors the Donner Party and their difficult journey. This memorial is located just north of the creek, off California route 89. It helps us remember the challenges faced by early settlers.
