Alejandrina Gessler y Lacroix (1831–1907) was a talented Spanish painter. She was born Alejandrina Gessler y Shaw. She trained in Paris, France. Alejandrina regularly showed her art at the famous Paris Salon. She was also one of the first women artists to join important art academies. These included the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid and the Academia de Bellas Artes in Cádiz.
Her Amazing Life as an Artist
Alejandrina Gessler y Lacroix was born in Cádiz, Spain. Her father was from Russia, and her mother was from Scotland and Ireland. In 1853, she married Charles Lacroix. He was a real estate developer from France. They moved to Paris together.
Training and Exhibitions
In Paris, Alejandrina studied art at Charles Chaplin's studio. She learned alongside other famous artists. These included Mary Cassatt and Eva Gonzalès. Alejandrina showed her paintings at the Paris Salon almost every year. This was from 1865 to 1885. She also painted for many places. These included hotels, churches, and large homes.
Later Years and Writings
Alejandrina returned to Spain in 1895. This was after her husband passed away. She continued to create art and write. Alejandrina used several different names for her work. Some of these were Madame Anselma and Marie Lacroix. In 1899, she published her memories. The book was called Recuerdos de Cádiz y Puerto Real (1841-1850). She used the name Fulana de Tal for this book.
