Alejandro Gastón Aravena Mori, born on June 22, 1967, is a famous architect from Chile. He leads a company called Elemental S.A. In 2016, he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This is one of the biggest awards an architect can receive. He also directed the 2016 Venice Biennale of Architecture, which is a major international event for architecture.

Early Life and Education

Alejandro Aravena finished his studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in 1992. He then studied art history in Venice, Italy, from 1992 to 1993. In 1994, he started his own architecture firm.

He was a visiting professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design for five years. He also teaches at Universidad Católica de Chile.

Building a Better World with Architecture

In 2006, Aravena became the leader of ELEMENTAL. This company works on projects that help society, especially in housing. They focus on making good homes that people can afford.

In 2015, Aravena was chosen to direct the Venice Biennale of Architecture. This is a very important architecture exhibition. For the 2016 event, he focused on "REPORTING FROM THE FRONT." He wanted to show how architecture can solve real-world problems.

He highlighted topics like social housing and how cities and rural areas connect. He also looked at how technology and natural materials can work together. He invited many famous architects to the exhibition.

Important Buildings and Designs

Alejandro Aravena has designed many interesting buildings. One of his well-known designs is the "Siamese Towers." This building is a workshop at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.

His other projects include schools, homes, and university buildings. He designed homes on Pirihueico Lake and buildings for St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. He also created art workshops for the Vitra campus in Germany.

Aravena also designed a children's playground in the Metropolitan Park of Santiago.

Awards and Recognition

Aravena has received many awards for his work. In 2006, he won the Erich Schelling Architecture Medal. He was also a finalist for the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2000.

In 2008, he received the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture. This award recognizes architects who design buildings that are good for the environment. He also won a Holcim Awards Silver for Sustainable Construction in Latin America.

His work has been shown in many exhibitions around the world. These include shows at Harvard, the São Paulo Biennale, and the MoMA in New York.

In 2016, he won the Pritzker Architecture Prize. This is often called the "Nobel Prize of architecture." It is the highest honor an architect can receive. From 2009 to 2015, he was part of the jury that chose the Pritzker Prize winners.
