Aleksandar Srnec (born July 30, 1924 – died March 27, 2010) was a famous Croatian artist. He is best known for his unique and modern art. This includes kinetic art, which is art that moves, and lumino-kinetic art, which uses both movement and light.

Early Art and New Ideas

Aleksandar Srnec was one of the people who started a group called Exat 51. This group was active between 1950 and 1956. It included architects and painters who wanted to try new things in art.

Art with Shapes and Movement

Srnec created abstract art. This means his art didn't show real-life things, but instead used shapes and colors.

  • In 1953, he made his first kinetic object. He called it Space Modulator. This was an artwork that could move.
  • By 1956, he started making sculptures and reliefs that moved.

Light and Movement in Art

In the 1960s, Srnec took part in special art shows called New Tendencies. These shows featured exciting new art styles.

Creating with Light

  • From 1962, he began to experiment with light and movement. One of his works was called Luminoplastic I.
  • In 1968, he started making "ambience art." This type of art creates a special feeling or atmosphere in a room.
  • His work Luminoplastic Ambience was shown in 1967 in Zagreb. It was the first artwork in Croatia that combined light, movement, and a special atmosphere.

Working with Films

Aleksandar Srnec also worked with the Zagreb School of Animated Films. He designed the backgrounds and props for three puppet films. He also helped make an animated film called A Man and His Shadow.

Later Works and Recognition

From 1974 to 1977, Srnec went back to making kinetic sculptures. These were often made from shiny, polished metals. He also continued to experiment with light in his art.

Exhibitions and Awards

Srnec's art was shown in many places both in Croatia and other countries. He had exhibitions in cities like Zagreb, Belgrade, Paris, London, and Mannheim.

  • Two big shows of his work were held in 2008 and 2010. They were called Present Absence.
  • He received many awards for his amazing art. These included the Vladimir Nazor Award for his life's work in 1999. He also got the Croatian Association of Artists Life Achievement Award in 2008.
