His plays, like Zemsta (The Revenge), are very important in Polish literature. Fredro also wrote popular fables. Many of his plays became well-known after he passed away. His best works have been translated into many languages, including English and German.

Who Was Aleksander Fredro?

Aleksander Fredro was born in a village called Surochów, near Jarosław. This area was part of Austria at the time. He grew up on his family's land and learned at home.

When he was 16, he joined the Polish army. He fought in the Napoleonic Wars, including a famous campaign in Moscow. He even wrote a book about his army adventures. After the wars, he returned home and started writing plays.

Fredro began writing in 1817. He mostly wrote funny plays, called comedies, about the lives of the Polish nobility. He was very good at creating interesting characters and exciting stories. His plays often had a lot of humor, like the funny shows people watched in the past.

Two of Fredro's fables are very popular children's stories in Poland. They are The Monkey in the Bath (Małpa w kąpieli) and Paul and Gawel (Paweł i Gaweł). His most famous comedy, Zemsta (The Revenge), was even made into a movie in Poland in 2002. A famous director named Andrzej Wajda made the film.

Fredro was the grandfather of Andrey Sheptytsky. Andrey Sheptytsky later became a leader of the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Poland honored Aleksander Fredro with a special postage stamp in 1978.

He passed away on July 15, 1876, in Lwów. He was buried in his family's grave in the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Rudky.
