Aleksander Józef Sułkowski (born March 15, 1695 – died May 21, 1762) was an important Polish general and a powerful nobleman. He started the famous Sułkowski family line. He was very active in the politics of Poland and the Electorate of Saxony.

Who Was Aleksander Sułkowski?

Born in Kraków, Poland, Aleksander Sułkowski became a close friend and trusted helper of King Augustus III of Poland. He worked as the King's Minister of State in Saxony from 1733 to 1738. This was a very important job.

In 1733, he was given the special title of a Count of the Holy Roman Empire. Later, in 1754, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria made him a Prince of Bielsko. These titles showed how powerful and respected he was.

Some people believed that Aleksander Joseph might have been the son of King Augustus II the Strong. If this were true, it would have made him King Augustus III's half-brother. Aleksander Joseph got his last name from Elżbieta Szalewska's husband, Stanisław Sułkowski.

His Family Life

On October 31, 1728, Sułkowski married Baroness Marie Franciszka von Stain zu Jettingen. They had eight children together. Sadly, Marie Franciszka passed away in 1741.

In 1743, he married Countess Anna Przebendowska. With her, he had four more children. Aleksander Sułkowski died on May 21, 1762, when he was 67 years old, in Leszno, Poland.

What Did He Own?

Aleksander Sułkowski bought many important properties. In 1738, he purchased the Leszczyński family's large estates in Rydzyna and nearby areas. These were not far from Leszno.

In 1752, he bought the Sułkowski Castle in Bielsko-Biała. This castle is in a region called Cieszyn Silesia. He bought the castle and its surrounding lands for a lot of money, 600,000 florins.

Sułkowski also ordered a very fancy Meissen porcelain dinner set. This beautiful porcelain was made between 1735 and 1738 by a famous artist named Johann Joachim Kändler. Many pieces of the porcelain had his personal symbol and coat of arms on them.
