What is Alemow?
Alemow is a rare and not very well-known citrus fruit. Scientists believe it is a natural mix, or hybrid, of two other citrus types: the citron and the biasong (C. micrantha).
Where Does Alemow Grow?
Alemow trees are found in tropical regions. They are more suited to warm, humid climates than many other citrus plants. Because they are rare, you won't find them growing everywhere.
What Does Alemow Look Like?
The fruit of the alemow tree is quite large. The trees themselves are short and have many sharp spines, which are like thorns.
What is Alemow Used For?
Even though the large fruits are usually not eaten by people in the areas where they grow, the plants are sometimes grown for other reasons.
- Traditional Medicine: Local people might use parts of the plant for traditional medicines.
- Rootstock: In places like California, alemow has been tested as a "rootstock" for other citrus trees. A rootstock is the lower part of a plant that has a strong root system. Another plant's stem is grafted onto it. This helps the top part of the plant grow better and be stronger.
