Aleran facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Aleran was an important leader in the Frankish Kingdom during the 800s. He served as the count of Barcelona from 848 to 852 AD. He was also the count of other areas like Empúries and Roussillon, and a special military leader called a margrave in a region known as Septimania. He shared these roles with another leader named Isembart from about 849 or 850 to 852 AD.

Aleran's Loyalty and Mission

Aleran was a nobleman from the Franks, a powerful group of people in Europe at that time. He was very loyal to King Charles the Bald, who ruled the western part of the Frankish Kingdom.

In 849, a big meeting was held in a city called Narbonne. At this meeting, King Charles gave Aleran and Isembart a very important job. They were told to bring back control of certain lands for the Frankish Kingdom. These lands, especially the "Hispanic Marches," were being held by rebel forces. These rebels were loyal to another leader, Pepin II, who was challenging King Charles's rule. Aleran and Isembart's mission was to make sure these areas were firmly back under the king's control.

The End of Aleran's Rule

Aleran died sometime in 851 or 852 AD. After his death, King Charles the Bald quickly appointed a new count for Barcelona. This new leader was named Odalric, who took over the role in 852.
