Aleria facts for kids
Aléria (also known as Alalia in ancient Greek and Roman times) is a town in France. It's located on the beautiful island of Corsica, which is part of France. Aléria is special because it's the easternmost point in Metropolitan France, meaning it's the furthest east you can go in that part of the country!
Discovering Ancient Aléria
Archaeologists have been digging in Aléria since 1950. They've explored an ancient burial ground called a "necropolis" in an area known as Casabianda.
These digs have uncovered amazing treasures! They found "grave goods," which are items buried with people long ago. These items date back to a time called the Late Archaic period.
Some of the cool things found include:
- Beautiful jewels
- Old weapons
- Metal objects
- Bronze and ceramic plates and dishes
- Special drinking cups from Athens, called Attic cups
- Unique drinking horns, known as rhytons
These discoveries help us learn a lot about the people who lived in Aléria thousands of years ago.
Aléria in Roman Times
Long ago, when the Roman Empire was powerful, Aléria was known as Alalia. During this time, it was a very important city. It served as the capital of the Roman province of Corsica. This means it was the main city where Roman leaders managed the island.
