Band History: How Alesana Started
Early Days and First Songs (2004–2005)
Shawn Milke and Patrick Thompson lived in Baltimore, Maryland, in the early 2000s. They played in a few bands there. They later decided to move to Raleigh, North Carolina, because they liked the music scene. In Raleigh, they met Dennis Lee, Steven Tomany, and Daniel Magnuson.
With these new members, Alesana officially formed in October 2004. The band's name was inspired by Aliceanna Street in Baltimore. This street is in a neighborhood called Fells Point.
Alesana was the first band to sign with Tragic Hero Records in 2005. Three of their demo songs were on a music collection called All The Tragedy Money Can Buy. In May 2005, they released their first EP (a short album) called Try This With Your Eyes Closed. That same year, their first drummer, Daniel Magnuson, left. Will Anderson replaced him, and then Jeremy Bryan became the new drummer. Alesana then toured across the United States. They even played at the Cornerstone Christian music festival.
First Full Album and New Members (2006–2008)
In 2006, Adam Ferguson joined the band as a guitarist and singer. They released their first full album, On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax, in the summer of 2006. This album was their first "concept album." Most of the songs were based on old Greek mythology stories.
Later in 2006, Alesana signed with Fearless Records. This label re-released their album in March 2007. They also made a music video for their song "Ambrosia." In 2007, the song "Apology" was released as an acoustic (unplugged) version on a collection called Punk Goes Acoustic 2. Steven Tomany left the band and Shane Crump joined as the new bassist. Shawn Milke's sister, Melissa Milke, also started singing female vocals on their songs.
In early 2008, On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax appeared on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. It reached number 44.
New Album and Tours (2008–2009)
In 2008, Alesana finished their second album, Where Myth Fades to Legend. It came out on June 3, 2008. The album's title was also the name of their tour. They toured with bands like Sky Eats Airplane and Our Last Night.
During the 2008 Warped Tour, Shane Crump had to leave for a short time. Jake Campbell filled in as bassist. When Shane came back, Adam Ferguson left the band. Jake Campbell then became the new guitarist and singer.
