Alexander Leo Herman (May 10, 1899 – December 13, 1975) was an important American baseball player and community leader. He played as an outfielder in the Negro leagues during the 1920s and 1930s. He is famous for discovering the legendary baseball player Satchel Paige. Later in his life, Herman made history by becoming the first African-American elected official in Alabama since the 1800s.

Growing Up in Mobile

Alex Herman was born in Mobile, Alabama. He later attended Tuskegee University. This university is well-known for its history.

Discovering a Baseball Legend

In 1925, Herman was playing and scouting for the Chattanooga Black Lookouts. During this time, he found a young player named Satchel Paige. Paige was also from Mobile, Alabama. Herman recognized Paige's amazing talent. He helped Paige start his incredible baseball career.

Playing for the Memphis Red Sox

Herman himself played baseball professionally. He joined the Memphis Red Sox in 1932. He played as an outfielder for this team.

Community and Political Leadership

Making History in Alabama Politics

After his baseball career, Alex Herman became very active in politics. He joined the Democratic Party. He was elected to the Mobile County Democratic Committee. This was a very big deal. It made him the first African-American elected official in Alabama since the Reconstruction era. This period was right after the American Civil War. Herman strongly encouraged other African Americans to vote. He believed in their right to participate in government.

He played a key role in bringing back Mardi Gras celebrations for Black communities in Mobile. He founded the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association. This group is the oldest Black Carnival organization in the city.

Alex Herman was a very religious man. He was a dedicated Catholic. He attended Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was also a member of its Holy Name Society.

His Family

Herman had one son named Kirk. His daughter, Alexis, became very famous. She served as the United States Secretary of Labor. She held this important position under President Bill Clinton. Alex Herman passed away in Mobile in 1975. He was 76 years old.
