Early Life
When Alex Kalymnios was in school, she first dreamed of becoming an actress. But then she directed her very first school play. That experience made her realize she wanted to be a director instead!
In 2002, Alex finished her studies at Bournemouth University. She earned a degree in TV and Video Production. After university, she got a special spot at the BBC Director's Academy. She said this was a fantastic way to learn more about directing.
Career Highlights
Alex Kalymnios started her career at Children's BBC. She began as a "runner," which is an entry-level job on a TV set. Over four years, she worked her way up to Assistant Producer.
While working there, she also directed, produced, and wrote a short film. It was called More Than a Job's Worth.
In 2007, Alex began directing episodes of the popular TV series Hollyoaks. She directed 13 episodes until 2009. From 2008 to 2012, she also directed seven episodes of Hollyoaks Later, a spin-off show.
A big moment in her career was in 2011. She directed Becoming Human, a spin-off from the show Being Human. This series earned her two important nominations:
- A BAFTA Cymru nomination for Digital Creativity and Games.
- A Banff Rockie Award nomination for Best Webseries – Fiction.
Alex has directed many other well-known TV shows. These include Seacht, The Cut, EastEnders, and Waterloo Road. In 2015, she directed the TV movie Cleveland Abduction.
She has also directed episodes for many other popular shows. Some of these are Salem, Scott & Bailey, The 100, The White Princess, and Once Upon a Time. More recently, she directed for Quantico, Timeless, Impulse, Titans, and S.W.A.T.. In 2021, she directed the miniseries Three Families.
