Career in Comics
Alex Maleev started his art journey with a background in fine arts. He began drawing comics in Bulgaria for magazines like Riko in the early 1990s.
In 1995, Maleev moved to the United States. He joined The Kubert School, a famous school for comic artists. He was so good that he quickly moved up to the second year. By early 1996, he was already working professionally. He drew for comics like James O'Barr's The Crow. He also helped create storyboards for the "Lost in Space" movie. Later, he had a successful time at DC Comics working on Batman: No Man's Land.
Sometimes, Maleev adds details from his Bulgarian background into his comics. For example, in Aliens vs. Predator, alien eggs are hidden in a typical Bulgarian church basement.
He first teamed up with writer Brian Michael Bendis on the Sam and Twitch series in 2000. After that, they both started working on Daredevil. In 2006, Maleev finished his work on Daredevil with Bendis. They then planned to work together on a new Spider-Woman series.
Bendis and Maleev also worked on the Halo: Uprising mini-series for Marvel Comics. In 2011, they relaunched the Moon Knight comic series. They are also creating their own comic called Scarlet under Marvel's Icon Comics imprint.
Maleev has also drawn for other popular Marvel comics. These include "New Avengers: Illuminati" and New Avengers issue #26. He also drew for special one-shot comics like Civil War: The Confession and Secret Invasion: Dark Reign.
Beyond comics, he created artwork for the character Sylar on the TV show Heroes. Maleev often mixes different art styles in his comics. He uses photos and digital effects with his drawings, like in Daredevil. He also uses watercolors and gouache paints, as seen in his work on Spider-Woman.
