The Kubert School is a special art school in Dover, New Jersey. It used to be called the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. This school teaches you how to draw cartoons and make comic books. It also teaches you about commercial illustration, which is art used for things like advertisements.
The Kubert School is the only school of its kind that is officially recognized. This means it meets high standards for teaching cartooning. The teachers are all professionals who work in the comics world. Many of them even went to the school themselves! They teach in a very hands-on way. The school is known for its challenging and intense classes. Many famous artists have studied here. These include Amanda Conner, Lee Weeks, Andy Price, Ed Piskor, and Alex Maleev. Many other comic book artists, like pencilers and inkers, also graduated from here.
How the School Started
The Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art began in September 1976. It was started by the famous cartoonist Joe Kubert and his wife, Muriel. The school first opened in an old mansion in Dover. Later, in 1984, it moved to Dover's old high school building. This new building had big windows that let in lots of light for drawing.
The first students graduated in 1978. Some of these early graduates were Stephen R. Bissette, Thomas Yeates, and Rick Veitch. By 1984, the school offered a three-year program. This program taught Cartoon Illustration, Graphic Arts, and Cinematic Animation. The school was approved by the New Jersey Department of Education. Joe Kubert's sons, Adam and Andy, also became comic book professionals. They now teach at the school, too.
Life at the School

The school has its own art store called the Kubert Art Store. You can buy all the art supplies you need for your classes there. This includes books and special drawing tables.
Usually, there are no more than 150 students at the school at one time. Besides the regular weekday classes, the school also has a special class every Saturday. Anyone can join this class, even if they are not in the main program. The Saturday class teaches basic cartooning lessons. Different former students of the school teach these classes.
Students come to The Kubert School from all over the world. Some come from countries like Japan and Malaysia. Others come from nearby towns. Joe Kubert once explained what the school believes in. He said that the best way to learn about comics is from people who work in the business. He also said that most students get jobs in art fields. But they have to work very hard! Students often draw for 8 to 10 hours a day, almost every day of the week. They are very dedicated to their art.
