Alex Zülle (born 5 July 1968) is a Swiss former professional road bicycle racer. He was one of the best cyclists in the world during the 1990s. He won the Vuelta a España race twice, in 1996 and 1997. He also finished second in the Tour de France in 1995 and 1999. In 1996, he became the world champion in the time-trial race in Lugano.

Alex Zülle's Cycling Journey

Starting Out in Cycling

Alex Zülle was born and grew up in Wil, Switzerland. When he was younger, he dreamed of becoming a skier. However, at 18, he had an accident that caused an injury. To help with his recovery, he started cycling in the Netherlands. He stopped for a while because it was too windy there.

His father bought him cycling gear and convinced him to try cycling again when they returned to Switzerland. After several successful years as an amateur rider, Zülle became a professional cyclist in 1991. He joined the ONCE team in September 1991 and stayed with them until 1997. When he first joined, he only spoke Swiss-German. But by the end of the 1993 Vuelta a España, he was able to answer reporters in Spanish.

A Challenging Year in 1998

In 1998, Alex Zülle joined the Festina cycling team. That year, the team faced some difficulties and was not allowed to compete in the 1998 Tour de France. This event became widely known as the Festina affair.

Later Career and Retirement

Alex Zülle's career happened at the same time as Miguel Induráin, who won the Tour de France five times. Zülle himself finished second in the Tour de France in 1999. He also won the Vuelta a España and the Tour de Suisse. He won individual stages in the Giro d'Italia as well.

Due to money problems with his team, Team Coast, Zülle moved to Phonak in March 2003. Alex Zülle retired from professional cycling in 2004. He held a special party for his fans in Wil that October.
