History of the Tour of Germany
Early Years of Cycling in Germany
The first big cycling race in Germany happened way back in 1911. It was a long race, over 1,500 kilometers (about 930 miles) long! Back then, Germany was made up of many smaller states. Several tours were held until 1931, organized by different groups.
The first official Deutschland Tour was held in 1931. The race became very well-organized and exciting between 1937 and 1939. However, it had to stop when World War II began.
Cycling's Return and New Popularity
After the war, road cycling wasn't very popular in Germany. The race's popularity often depended on whether German riders did well in other big races. This led to different versions of the Tour happening in West Germany.
Things changed when Jan Ullrich, a German cyclist, won the Tour de France in 1997. This made cycling much more popular in Germany. Because of this new interest, the German Cyclists' Federation and a company called Upsolut restarted the Deutschland Tour in 1999.
Sadly, the race stopped again after 2008. This was because TV sponsors were no longer very interested in it.
