Alexa Karolinski's Film Career

Alexa studied Social Documentary Film in New York City. Her first big film was called Oma & Bella. This was a documentary about her grandmother ("Oma") and her grandmother's best friend ("Bella"). The film showed their daily lives, like cooking and talking. It also touched on their experiences during a very difficult time in history.

The film Oma & Bella was first shown at the Berlin Film Festival. It was very successful. Alexa won the important Grimme Prize for her work on this film.

Exploring History Through Film

Karolinski's second major documentary was Lebenszeichen (Signs of Life). This film explored how different people in Germany remember their history. It was released in 2018. Many critics praised it. One magazine, Der Spiegel, called it a very important German-Jewish film.

Alexa Karolinski and Anna Winger worked together to create the miniseries Unorthodox. They were both writers for the show. It first came out on March 26, 2020. This series was special because it was Netflix's first show mostly in Yiddish.
