History of Der Spiegel
The very first issue of Der Spiegel magazine was published on January 4, 1947, in Hanover, a city in Germany. Later, its main office moved to Hamburg.
Rudolf Augstein was the person in charge of the magazine, known as the publisher, from its very beginning until he passed away in 2002.
In the early 1960s, the magazine faced a big challenge known as the "Spiegel affair." The government's Defense Secretary, Franz Josef Strauß, was upset about a critical report Der Spiegel published about the German army (the Bundeswehr). This event showed how important it was for the press to be free to report the truth, even if it criticizes powerful people.
Der Spiegel has become famous for finding out about problems and scandals in the government and other important areas in Germany. For example, they helped uncover details about the Flick affair, which was a major political scandal. The magazine is well-known for its strong and well-written stories that reveal important information.
