Alexander Bruce, Earl of Carrick (died July 19, 1333) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was the son of Edward Bruce, who was the younger brother of King Robert the Bruce. His mother was Isabella, daughter of John of Strathbogie, 9th Earl of Atholl.

Some historical writings say his parents were married. However, other sources suggest this might not have been the case. This is because Alexander did not immediately inherit his father's lands and titles.

A Life of Loyalty and Conflict

Alexander Bruce lived during a time of great change in Scotland. He played a part in the struggles for control of the country.

Fighting for Scotland's Future

Alexander was involved in the first invasion of Scotland by Edward Balliol. Balliol was trying to become King of Scotland. Alexander's role during this time was a bit complicated.

  • He first fought alongside those loyal to the Bruce family at the Battle of Dupplin Moor.
  • Later, he joined Edward Balliol's side for a short time.
  • He was captured by the Bruce loyalists at the Battle of Annan. He almost lost his life there.
  • After this, he rejoined the side loyal to the Bruce family. He fought for King David II, who was Robert the Bruce's son.

Alexander Bruce died fighting bravely for Scotland. He was killed at the Battle of Halidon Hill on July 19, 1333.

His Family

Alexander Bruce was married to Eleonora Douglas. She was the daughter of Sir Archibald Douglas. Archibald Douglas was a very important leader in Scotland, known as the Guardian of Scotland. Eleonora was also the sister of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas.

Alexander and Eleonora had one daughter together. Her name was Eleanor de Brus. It is believed that Eleanor married Sir William de Cunynghame of Kilmaurs. They are thought to have had children.
