Alexander Calder (born around 1806 – died August 23, 1853) was an important figure in the early history of Beaumont, Texas. He became the very first mayor of the city on August 8, 1840.

Calder grew up in New York but decided to move to the Beaumont area in 1838. He quickly became the clerk for the county court. Many of the early records for Jefferson County, Texas are even written in his own handwriting!

Becoming Beaumont's First Mayor

Calder won the first election for mayor of Beaumont on July 28, 1840. This election happened under a special law called the Incorporation Act. Beaumont had officially become a city just two years before this election.

Calder had a house located at 600 Calder Avenue. This street was likely named after him.
