Alessandro Farnese (born January 10, 1635 – died February 18, 1689) was an important Italian military leader. He served as the Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands from 1678 to 1682.

It's easy to confuse him with his famous great-grandfather, also named Alexander Farnese. To tell them apart, this Alessandro was often called Alessandro di Odoardo, meaning "Alessandro, son of Odoardo."

His official title was Prince of Parma. His older brother, Ranuccio II, was the sixth Duke of Parma and Piacenza.

Alessandro Farnese's Life Story

Alessandro Farnese was born in Parma, Italy. He was the second son of Odoardo Farnese, who was the fifth Duke of Parma. His mother was Margherita de' Medici.

Military Career and Leadership

Alessandro had a strong military career. He first served as a general in the army of Venice. During this time, he fought against the Turk forces.

Later, he became an admiral in the Spanish Navy. This shows his skill in both land and sea battles.

Governor of the Southern Netherlands

After the Franco-Dutch War, Alessandro took on a very important role. He became the governor of the Southern Netherlands. This area was also known as the Spanish Netherlands.

He held this position from 1678 until 1682.

His Final Years

Alessandro Farnese passed away in 1689. He died in Madrid, the capital city of Spain.

Alessandro Farnese had children with his mistress, Maria de Lao y Carillo. Here are their names:
