Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Forbes was an important Scottish noble who lived in the 1400s. He became the Lord Forbes around 1483, taking over from his father, William, the 3rd Lord Forbes. Alexander was known for his loyalty to the king and for facing challenges in his personal life.

Alexander Forbes's Marriage

In Alexander's time, marriages for nobles were often arranged. A powerful lady named Margaret, Lady Dirleton, wanted Alexander to marry her daughter, Margaret Ker. She even bought the right to arrange his marriage.

However, Alexander had other plans. He chose to marry Lady Margaret Boyd instead. She was the daughter of Thomas Boyd, Earl of Arran. Because Alexander married without Lady Dirleton's permission, he faced a penalty. In 1483, he was ordered to pay Lady Dirleton a large sum of money.

Loyalty to King James III

Alexander Forbes was a strong supporter of King James III. In 1488, the king's own son led a rebellion against him. Alexander stood by King James III during this difficult time.

Sadly, King James III was killed at the Battle of Sauchieburn. After the king's death, Alexander was called to appear before the Scottish Parliament. He was accused of treason, which means being disloyal to the new king.

Seeking Justice for the King

Instead of going to Parliament, Alexander Forbes showed his deep sorrow and anger. In Aberdeen, he bravely displayed the blood-stained shirt of the dead king on his spear. This was a powerful symbol to show that he wanted justice for King James III's death.

Alexander gathered a large group of supporters. He hoped to get revenge for the king. However, his plans were stopped when his ally, the Earl of Lennox, was defeated in battle.

Alexander then decided to submit to the new king, James IV. King James IV forgave Alexander and welcomed him into his favor.

Later Life and Successors

Alexander Forbes passed away around 1491. His wife, Lady Margaret Boyd, survived him. She was a granddaughter of King James II. Later, she married David, Lord Kennedy.

Alexander and Lady Margaret did not have any children. Because of this, his two younger brothers became the next Lords Forbes. First, Arthur became the 5th Lord, and then John became the 6th Lord Forbes.
