Alexander Saidgereyevich Galimov (Russian: Александр Саидгереевич Галимов; born 2 May 1985 – died 12 September 2011) was a Russian professional ice hockey player. He played as a right wing. At the time of his death, he was a member of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a team in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Sadly, his team's plane crashed on 7 September 2011. Almost everyone on board, including 45 crew and passengers, died in the accident. Alexander Galimov was the only player from the team who survived the initial crash.
Playing Ice Hockey
Alexander Galimov was born in 1985 in Yaroslavl, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He started his professional ice hockey career in 2004. His first and only team was Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
Galimov was a strong player. He played in 341 games in the RSL and KHL. During his career, he scored 64 goals and made 62 assists, totaling 126 points. He also spent 280 minutes in the penalty box.
He was also a part of the Russian national team. He helped the Russian Under-20 team win a silver medal. This happened at the 2005 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He also played for the main Russia men's national ice hockey team. He joined them for the 2009–10 and 2010–11 Euro Hockey Tour games.
A Tragic Event
On 7 September 2011, a Yakovlev Yak-42 plane crashed. This happened just outside Yaroslavl, Russia. The plane was carrying almost the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team. They were traveling to Minsk for their first game of the season. The team's coaches and young players were also on board.
Alexander Galimov was the only player from the team who survived the crash at first. A crew member, Alexander Sizov, also survived. Galimov was badly injured. Doctors in Yaroslavl worked to help him. The next day, he was moved to a special hospital in Moscow. He was put into a deep sleep by doctors to help him heal.
Sadly, on 12 September 2011, Alexander Galimov passed away. He died from the serious injuries he got in the plane crash. His death was a very sad moment for the ice hockey world. The team's marketing manager said another memorial would be held for him.
