Alexander Hegius was an important German thinker and teacher from the 1400s. He was born in a place called Heek, which is how he got his name. He is remembered for helping to change how people learned and for supporting a new way of thinking called Humanism.

Early Life and Learning

Alexander Hegius was likely born around 1433 to 1440. He learned Greek from a famous scholar named Rodolphus Agricola. This was a big deal because not many people studied Greek back then.

The Famous School in Deventer

Around 1474, Hegius moved to Deventer in the Netherlands. Here, he became the head of a very important school. This school became well-known for having many bright students who later became famous.

One of his most famous students was Erasmus, who became a very influential writer and scholar. Other students included Hermann von dem Busche and Murmellius, who helped spread humanist ideas. Conrad Goclenius and Konrad Mutian also studied there.

His Writings

After Hegius passed away, his student Jacobus Faber published his writings. These included short poems, essays about philosophy, notes on grammar, and letters. His works showed he knew a lot about Latin. He also strongly believed in the importance of learning Greek.

Why He Is Remembered

Alexander Hegius is mostly remembered for his big impact on humanism. He helped get rid of the old, outdated ways of teaching from the Middle Ages. Instead, he encouraged his students to read and study the original works of classical authors.

Hegius was also very generous. He spent a lot of his own money helping students who were poor. When he died, he didn't have much left, only his books and clothes. His dedication to education and helping others made him a key figure in the humanist movement.
