Sir Alexander Home of that Ilk, 1st Lord Home facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Alexander Home, born around 1403, was an important Scottish leader. He became the first Lord Home and lived until about 1490. He was a Sheriff Deputy for Berwickshire in 1448, which meant he helped keep law and order in that area. Later, on August 2, 1473, he was made a Lord of Parliament. This was a big honor, making him a powerful noble who advised the king. Sir Alexander Home is also an ancestor of the Earls of Home, a famous Scottish family.

Early Life and Family

Alexander Home's father, also named Sir Alexander Home, was a powerful landowner. He was known as "of that Ilk," meaning he was the head of the Home family. Sadly, his father was killed in a battle called the battle of Verneuil in 1424. Young Alexander became the new head of the family that same year, showing he was old enough to take on the role. His mother was Jean, the daughter of Sir William Hay.

In 1425, Alexander made an agreement with his uncle, David Home. They decided to share any money they made from managing the lands around Coldingham. This shows how the family worked together to manage their wealth and influence.

Important Missions

Sir Alexander Home was a trusted figure, even traveling abroad for important missions. In 1450, he traveled with William Douglas, 8th Earl of Douglas, a very powerful Scottish noble. They likely went to Rome for a special event called the Papal Jubilee, which was a big religious celebration.

In 1451, King James II of Scotland chose Sir Alexander to be one of his special representatives, called envoys. Their job was to talk with England and try to make peace. On August 14, 1451, Sir Alexander and the other Scottish envoys successfully signed a truce, or peace agreement, with England for three years. This happened in a church in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Marriages and Children

Lord Home was married twice. His first wife was Mariotta, also known as Marion. She was the daughter of John Lauder and Katherine. Alexander and Marion were related, so they needed special permission from the Pope to marry. Pope Martin V gave them this permission in 1426. Later, a bishop confirmed that all their children would be considered legitimate.

Alexander and Marion had at least seven children:

  • Alexander, who was known as the Master of Home. He passed away before his father in 1456. He had two sons:
  • John, who became a leader at Coldingham Priory, a religious house.
  • Nicholas
  • Sir Patrick, who owned Fast Castle.
  • George, who was born in 1435.
  • Elyne or Helen, who married Sir Adam Hepburn.
  • Jonet or Janet, who married her cousin, Sir Robert Lauder.

Before 1467, Sir Alexander Home married again. His second wife was Margaret, the daughter of Alexander, Master of Montgomerie. They had more children together:

  • Sir Thomas
  • Nicholas (this suggests his first son named Nicholas might have died young)
  • Elizabeth
  • David

Sir Alexander Home lived a very long life for his time, passing away around 1490. After his death, his grandson, Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home, took over as the head of the family. This grandson later became a leader of the nobles who fought against King James III of Scotland.
