After the 2012 Summer Olympics, there were rumors that López might move to a European team. One team mentioned was Wigan Athletic from England. However, these rumors did not lead to a transfer. Later, a journalist claimed that the stories about Wigan's interest were just a prank. He said he and his friends made up the stories to trick news outlets.

Second Return to Olimpia
After leaving Al-Khaleej, López rejoined Olimpia for a second time. He scored a goal in his very first game back on February 9, 2017. In October 2017, Alexander López helped Olimpia win the first-ever CONCACAF League tournament. They won the final match after a penalty shootout.
