Alexander Loyd (sometimes spelled Alexander Lloyd) was an important leader in early Chicago. He was born on August 19, 1805, and passed away on May 7, 1872. Loyd served as the 4th mayor of Chicago, Illinois, from 1840 to 1841. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
Loyd's Early Life and Work
Alexander Loyd was born in Orange County, New York. He moved to Chicago in 1833. When he arrived, he started his own shop. Within just four years, he became known as a top builder, carpenter, and contractor in the city.
In 1835, Loyd was chosen to be on the Chicago Board of Trustees. This group helped manage the village before it became a big city. He also joined the volunteer Fire Department. In 1838, he became the Chief Engineer of the fire department, serving for one year.
Becoming Mayor of Chicago
Alexander Loyd became the 4th Mayor of Chicago in 1840. He won the election against the mayor at the time, Benjamin Wright Raymond.
Loyd officially became mayor on March 9, 1840. During his time as mayor, he helped lead the growing city.
His term as mayor ended on March 4, 1841. After him, another Democrat, Francis Cornwall Sherman, took over the office.
After Being Mayor
Even after his time as mayor, Loyd continued to serve Chicago. In 1842, he worked as a Trustee for the 2nd district of the Chicago Schools. This role involved helping to manage the city's schools.
In 1850, an alderman named G. W. Snow resigned from his position. An alderman is like a city council member. Loyd was elected to finish Snow's term, serving for one year as an alderman for the 2nd ward.
Alexander Loyd passed away in 1872. He was buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago.
