Alexander Macdonald, 1st Baron Macdonald (born around 1745 – died 12 September 1795) was an important Scottish nobleman. He was also the leader, or Chief, of a large family group called Clan Macdonald of Sleat.

Early Life and Education
Alexander Macdonald was the younger son of Sir Alexander Macdonald, 7th Baronet. His mother was Lady Margaret Montgomerie. He grew up in a noble family in Scotland.
School and Military Service
Alexander went to a very famous school called Eton College. After finishing school, he joined the army. He served in a special group known as the Grenadier Guards. This was a respected military role.

Local Official and Archer
He was a deputy lieutenant for Inverness-shire. This meant he helped with local government and public duties in that area. He was also a brigadier-general in the Royal Company of Archers. This is a ceremonial group that serves as the monarch's bodyguard in Scotland.
Becoming a Baron
In 1766, Alexander took over the title of Baronet from his older brother. This made him Sir Alexander Macdonald, 9th Baronet. Then, in 1776, he received an even higher honor. He was made a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland. This new title was Baron Macdonald, of Slate.
Family Life
In 1768, Lord Macdonald married Elizabeth Diana Bosville. She was the eldest daughter of Godfrey Bosville IV. Elizabeth's brother was Colonel William Bosville.
Children and Later Years
Lord and Lady Macdonald had a large family. They had seven sons and three daughters. Lady Macdonald passed away in 1789. Lord Macdonald lived for six more years after her. He died in September 1795. His son, Alexander Macdonald, 2nd Baron Macdonald, inherited his titles.
