Alexander Macdonald, 2nd Baron Macdonald facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alexander Wentworth Macdonald, 2nd Baron Macdonald (born 9 December 1773 – died 19 June 1824) was an important person from Scotland. He was a peer, which means he held a special noble title. He was also a Member of Parliament, meaning he helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Family

Alexander Macdonald was born in 1773. He was the oldest son of Alexander Macdonald, 1st Baron Macdonald. His mother was Elizabeth Diana Bosville. The family lived on the Isle of Skye in Scotland.

Becoming a Baron

When his father passed away in 1795, Alexander became the 2nd Baron Macdonald. This was a special noble title. However, because it was an Irish peerage, it did not allow him to sit in the British House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the British Parliament.

Role in Parliament

Even though he couldn't be in the House of Lords, Alexander still wanted to serve his country. In 1796, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for a place called Saltash. The House of Commons is the other main part of the British Parliament. He held this important job until 1802.

What a Member of Parliament Does

A Member of Parliament, or MP, is elected by people to represent them. MPs work in the House of Commons to discuss new laws and make decisions for the country. It's a bit like being a representative in a student council, but for the whole country!

Later Life and Legacy

Lord Macdonald passed away in June 1824 when he was 50 years old. He never got married. After his death, his younger brother, Godfrey Macdonald, 3rd Baron Macdonald of Sleat, took over his noble titles.
