Alexander Remmovich Melentyev (Russian: Алекса́ндр Ре́ммович Меле́нтьев; 27 June 1954 – 16 February 2015) was a famous Soviet competitive sport shooter. He won a gold medal at the 1980 Summer Olympics. The world record he set in 1980 remained unbeaten for 34 years. He was the first Olympic gold medalist from Kyrgyzstan.
Early Life and Training
Alexander Melentyev was born in Penza, a city in Russia. However, he spent most of his childhood and grew up in the Kyrgyz SSR. This area is now known as Kyrgyzstan.
Olympic Gold and World Record
Alexander Melentyev is best known for his amazing performance at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He competed in the 50 metre pistol event. In this event, shooters aim at targets from 50 meters away using a pistol.
At the 1980 Olympics, Alexander achieved a score of 581 out of a possible 600 points. This incredible score set a new world record and a new Olympic record at the time. His world record stood for 34 years, which is a very long time in sports! It was finally broken in 2014 by another shooter named Jin Jong-oh.
Even though his world record was later broken, Alexander Melentyev's score of 581 still holds the Olympic record for the 50-meter pistol event. This means no one has scored higher than him in this event at the Olympic Games since 1980.

Alexander Melentyev passed away on February 16, 2015. He is remembered as a true legend in the sport of shooting. His achievements, especially his long-standing world and Olympic records, show his incredible skill and dedication.
