Alexander St Clair was born in 1672. He became the 19th Baron of Roslin. This was a title of nobility in Scotland. It meant he was a powerful landowner and leader in the Roslin area.
His Early Life and Family
Alexander was the second son of James St Clair, 18th Baron of Roslin. His mother was Jean Spotswood. Her father was Henry Spotswood, the Sheriff of Dublin.
Alexander's older brother, James, was killed in 1690. This happened during the Battle of the Boyne. This battle was a major event in Irish history. Because his older brother died, Alexander became the next Baron of Roslin. He took over the family lands and title.
Alexander married a woman named Jean. She was the daughter of Robert, the 7th Lord Sempill. Alexander and Jean had a son named William St Clair of Roslin. William later became the next Baron. They also had two other sons and three daughters. Sadly, these children died when they were young. Alexander St Clair himself passed away in 1706.
A Baron with a Poetic Talent
Alexander St Clair was known for his skill with words. He had a great talent for writing poetry. His poems were not printed in books during his lifetime. Instead, they were kept as special handwritten documents. These original poems are still preserved today. You can find them in the Advocates Library.
