Mall History
Early Days: Opening in 1973
Alexandria Mall first opened its doors in 1973. It was built by a family-owned construction company from Pineville, Louisiana. When it first opened, the mall had several well-known stores. These included JCPenney, Sears, and Beall-Ladymon. There were also local department stores like Weiss & Goldring, Green's, and Wellan's.
The mall also had a movie theater called Cinema I & II. It showed movies on two screens. General Cinema Corporation ran this movie theater.
Growing Bigger: The 1986 Expansion
In 1986, Alexandria Mall got much bigger. A new expansion added more department stores. These included Dillard's and Mervyn's. Many other stores were also added. A new food court was built, offering many places to eat.
To celebrate this big expansion, local pizza chefs did something amazing. They cooked a giant pizza that weighed 650 pounds! Later, a clothing store called Stein Mart and a music store called Sam Goody opened in the space that used to be Wellan's.
Changes in Ownership and Stores
Over the years, some stores changed. Beall-Ladymon was bought by another company, Stage Stores, in 1994. In 2004, the mall was sold to J. Herzog Properties. Then, in 2010, Jones Lang Lasalle started managing and leasing the mall's spaces.
Some stores closed down. Stein Mart closed on April 30, 2006. Mervyn's also closed soon after. In March 2007, Burlington Coat Factory opened in the old Mervyn's spot. Weiss & Goldring moved to a new location outside the mall.
In 2008, Bed Bath & Beyond opened where Weiss & Goldring used to be. The old Stein Mart location became a children's play place called Slinkee's. Next to it, the Lagniappe Theater Company moved into the former Sam Goody spot. Both Slinkee's and the theater had to move out later. This was to make room for a new big store. It was announced in 2016 that a Conn's store would open there.
Recent Store Closures
More recently, some long-standing stores have closed. On May 31, 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. The Sears store in Alexandria Mall closed in September 2018.
It was also announced that the Stage store in the mall would close. This happened in early 2019, and the store is now closed.
