Alfonso Leng facts for kids
Alfonso Leng Haygus (born February 11, 1884 – died November 11, 1974) was a famous Chilean composer. He wrote classical music, especially in a style called "post-romantic." This means his music often had strong feelings and beautiful melodies, like music from the late 1800s. Leng was born in Santiago, Chile.
He created the first really important symphonic (orchestra) piece in Chile. It was called "La Muerte de Alcino" (The Death of Alcino). This was a "symphonic poem," which is a piece of music that tells a story or describes something, like a painting. His piece was inspired by a book by Pedro Prado.
Leng also wrote many songs for singers in different languages. He composed important piano pieces too, like his five "Doloras" from 1914. These "Doloras" were so good that he later arranged them for a full orchestra. Today, they are often played in concerts in Chile and other parts of Latin America. In 1957, Alfonso Leng won the National Art Prize, a big award in Chile.
