Alfred Edgar Wigg facts for kids
Alfred Edgar Wigg (born February 2, 1857 – died May 1, 1914) was an important doctor from South Australia. He was born in North Adelaide.
His father, Edgar Smith Wigg, came to South Australia in 1810. He started a very successful bookshop called E. S. Wigg and Son in Rundle Street. Alfred was a bright student. He won prizes at J. L. Young's Adelaide Educational Institution. He then studied medicine at Adelaide University and University College London. He also studied in Europe. He came back to Australia in 1882 as a qualified doctor.
Dr. Wigg's Medical Career
Alfred Wigg worked as a doctor in Norwood until 1913, when he retired. He was a volunteer doctor at the Adelaide Children's Hospital for over 30 years. For a long time, he was also a board member and the most senior surgeon there. In 1903, he was the chairman of the Dental Board. This board helps manage dental care.
Community Involvement
Beyond his medical work, Alfred Wigg was also involved in his community. He was the first chairman of the East Torrens Bowling Club. He even became its president at one point.
Dr. Wigg's Family Life
Alfred Wigg married Edith Caroline Parnham on June 24, 1884. They had three daughters:
- (Winifred) Olive Wigg (born June 23, 1885 – died 1964) married J. Stanley Murray in 1910.
- Doris Edith Wigg (born December 21, 1888 – died September 29, 1891).
- Phyllis Miriam Wigg (born September 6, 1892) married Collier Robert Cudmore in 1922.
Alfred Wigg passed away on May 1, 1914, in London. He was there trying to rest and get better from heart problems. His wife and daughter Phyllis were with him. His daughter, Mrs. J. Stanley Murray, also survived him. He was also survived by his brothers, E. Neale Wigg and Dr. Henry Higham Wigg, and his sisters, Mrs. W. L. Davidson, Ellen Deborah Wigg, and Florence Fanny Wigg.
