Alfred Paul Victor Morel-Fatio (born January 9, 1850, in Strasbourg, France – died October 10, 1924, in Versailles, France) was a very important French scholar. He was known as a "Hispanist," which means he was an expert in the history, language, and culture of Spain and Portugal. He studied at a famous school in Paris called École des chartes.

Who Was Alfred Morel-Fatio?

Alfred Morel-Fatio became the leading French expert on Spanish culture during his time. He dedicated his life to studying and teaching about the languages and literature of southern Europe, especially Spain.

Early Career and Studies

From 1875 to 1880, Morel-Fatio worked at the National Library of France. He was part of the department that handled old handwritten documents, called manuscripts. During this time, he created an excellent list of Spanish and Portuguese manuscripts held at the library.

After his work at the library, he became a professor in Algiers for five years. He taught at the École supérieure des lettres there.

Becoming a Leading Scholar

In 1885, Morel-Fatio returned to France. He accepted a special teaching position at the Collège de France. Here, he taught about the languages and literature of southern Europe. He became very well-known and respected for his knowledge.

In 1894, he was invited to give a special lecture at Oxford University in England. He was also chosen as a corresponding member of the Spanish Royal Academy of the Language. This was a great honor, showing his importance in the study of Spanish.

Awards and Recognition

Morel-Fatio received many important awards and honors during his life. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of Charles III in Spain. In France, he became an officer of public instruction. He also became a member of the Institute of France in 1910. Finally, he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor, one of France's highest awards.

Contributions to Publications

Alfred Morel-Fatio also wrote for and directed important academic journals. After 1874, he regularly wrote for a journal called Romania. After 1899, he became one of the directors of the Bulletin Hispanique. These journals were important for sharing new research about Spanish and Portuguese studies.
