Biography

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Alfredo Alcón was born on March 3, 1930, in Liniers, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires. His family had roots in Spain. His grandmother came from Cádiz, and his mother was from Castile. This helped him speak Spanish very well, which was useful when he worked in Spain.

His father died when Alfredo was very young. Because of this, his family moved to Ciudadela, Buenos Aires. When he was 11, he read Richard III by William Shakespeare. This play became one of his first big inspirations.

Alfredo started his career working as a radio host. He would announce news from the Liniers market, which was a big market for animals in Argentina.

Rise to Film Stardom

His first well-known film was Love Never Dies in 1955. He starred alongside Mirtha Legrand in this movie. Luis César Amadori directed the film.

Because Love Never Dies was so successful, Alfredo Alcón and Mirtha Legrand worked together again. They starred in La Pícara soñadora, directed by Ernesto Arancibia, and Con gusto a rabia, directed by Fernando Ayala.

Alfredo Alcón made some of his most famous films with director Leopoldo Torre Nilsson. One of their movies was Un Guapo del '900 in 1968.

Historical Films with Leopoldo Torre Nilsson

After Un Guapo del '900, they made three important historical films. These were Martín Fierro in 1968, based on a famous poem. Then came El Santo de la Espada in 1970, which told the story of José de San Martín, a hero of Argentina. In 1971, they made Güemes: la tierra en armas, about the life of Martín Miguel de Güemes.

They also worked together on other movies like La Mafia (1972), The Seven Madmen (1973), Boquitas pintadas (1974), and El Pibe Cabeza (1975).

Theatre Work and Later Years

Alfredo Alcón was also very active in theatre. He worked as both an actor and a director. Famous directors like Margarita Xirgu, Carlos Gandolfo, and Omar Grasso directed some of his plays.

As a director, he led plays such as Los caminos de Federico and Bocca-Alcón. He also directed Homenaje Ibsen, ¡Shakespeare todavía!, and Final de partida. He even played the main role in Hamlet during a difficult time in Argentina. This was a brave choice because the play had strong political messages.

His last appearance on television was a small role in Herederos de una venganza in 2011. He played the leader of a special group in that show. Before this, he had worked in TV series like Por el nombre de Dios and Vulnerables, both from 1999. He also performed in the play Los reyes de la risa with Guillermo Francella.

Alfredo Alcón became ill in late 2013. He passed away on April 11, 2014. Many people mourned his death. His coffin was taken to the Argentine National Congress and then to La Chacarita Cemetery. It also stopped briefly at the Teatro General San Martín, a famous theatre.
