A Look Back at Algarrobo
Puerto Rico used to be part of Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is part of the U.S. but does not have the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Algarrobo and a nearby barrio called Llanos together had 1,226 people.
Special Communities Program
In 2004, Algarrobo was named one of Puerto Rico's Special Communities (Comunidades Especiales). This program helps communities that need extra support for things like housing, education, and jobs. The Puerto Rico Office for Socioeconomic and Community Development identified these places to help them improve.
