About Alger Island

Island History

Long ago, in the late 1700s, Alger Island was called Deer Island. Later, people started calling it Big Island. This was because it was one of the larger islands in the area. The name Alger Island came from a family named Alger. Mort and Ollie Alger, a father and son, owned the island for a long time.

A State Campground

The state of New York bought Alger Island on January 16, 1950. During the 1960s, special shelters called Lean-tos were built there. Today, the island is a state campground. It is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. You can only reach Alger Island by boat.
