Webb, also known as Webb Town, is a town located in the northern part of Herkimer County, New York. In 2020, about 1,797 people lived there.

The town is named after William Seward Webb. He was a very important person in the railroad business. He led companies like the Raquette Lake Transportation Company and the Mohawk and Malone Railway. Railroads in Webb were key to bringing many tourists to the Adirondacks in the late 1800s. Today, the Adirondack Railroad still offers fun tourist train rides through the town.

A Look Back: Webb's History

People tried to settle in Webb around 1800 and 1811. But these early attempts did not work out. The weather was too harsh, and the land was not good for farming.

The first people who successfully settled here were Otis Arnold and his family. They arrived around 1837. The Arnolds managed to grow and sell crops like hay, vegetables, and fruit. They also sold milk.

Eventually, maps and travel guides started to mention the settlement. The Arnold family even turned their home into a kind of hotel. The area became famous for its beautiful rivers, lakes, and mountains.

How Webb Became a Town

In 1836, a town called Wilmurt was created. It was made from parts of the towns of Ohio and Russia. Most people lived in the southern part of Wilmurt.

Webb was formed in 1896 from the northern part of Wilmurt. After that, some of Wilmurt's land was given back to the town of Ohio.

When Dr. William Seward Webb's Mohawk and Malone Railway reached Webb in 1892, it brought a lot of growth. For the next 20 years, the town thrived because of lumbering (cutting down trees for wood) and tourism.
