History of Russia

The area that is now Russia was first part of a larger town called Norway, which was created in 1792. The town of Russia was officially formed from Norway in 1806. When it was first created, it was called "Union." However, in 1808, its name was changed to Russia.

Later, in 1836, parts of Russia and another town called Ohio were used to create a new town named Wilmurt. This town no longer exists today. When the town of Webb was formed in 1896, most of Wilmurt became part of Webb, and the rest went back to Ohio.

In the past, around 1875, the main jobs in Russia involved making cheese and butter. Farmers also grew crops like maple sugar, apples, potatoes, and oats. In 1865, the population of Russia was 2,030 people.

Geography of Russia

The town of Russia covers a total area of about 60.4 square miles (156.5 km2). Most of this area, about 57.0 square miles (147.5 km2), is land. The rest, about 3.5 square miles (9.0 km2), is water.

A large body of water called Hinckley Reservoir is located in the north-central part of the town. This reservoir was created on West Canada Creek. West Canada Creek also forms the western border of the town, separating it from Oneida County south of the reservoir.

Two important roads, New York State Route 8 and New York State Route 28, meet in the village of Poland, which is partly in Russia.
