Thendara, New York facts for kids
Thendara is a small community, called a hamlet, located in Herkimer County, New York. It's nestled inside the beautiful Adirondack Park, found in the southern part of the town of Webb. You can find it west of Old Forge, right on Route 28.
Thendara is home to the Thendara train station, which is part of the Adirondack Railroad. For a long time, this station was the last stop for trains heading north from Utica. But in the spring of 2023, the train line was made longer, and now it goes all the way to Tupper Lake!
This station used to be called "Fulton Chain." It was an important meeting point where the Fulton Chain Railway connected with the Mohawk and Malone Railway. Today, the Mohawk and Malone Railway line is used for fun scenic train rides.
Thendara has some special places that are officially recognized for their history. The "National Register of Historic Places" is a list of important buildings, sites, and districts in the United States. It helps protect them. The area around the New York Central Railroad's Adirondack line was added to this list in 1993. Later, in 2010, the Thendara Historic District itself was also added.
People tried to start a settlement here in Thendara way back in 1811, to help build up the town of Webb. But that first attempt didn't work out.
