Algueña (pronounced al-GEN-ya) or L'Alguenya is a small town in Spain. It is a municipality located in the Alicante province. This area is part of the comarca of Vinalopó Mitjà. Algueña has a dry, sunny Mediterranean climate.
Where is Algueña?
Algueña is in the far western part of an area called Medio Vinalopó. It sits right on the border of what was once the old Kingdom of Murcia. The town is on a high, flat area, about 534 meters (1,752 feet) above sea level. To the north, the Reclot mountain range makes the land a bit hilly. The municipality includes the main town and a smaller village called La Solana, which is about 3 kilometers away.
Algueña's Story
The first time Algueña was mentioned in writing was in the year 1582. Back then, it was called Alhenya. This mention was in a legal case between the powerful families who ruled the nearby towns of Monòver and Novelda.
For a long time, Algueña was part of the municipality of Pinoso. However, it had its own independent church parish even before that. In 1934, Algueña officially became its own independent municipality. This happened because many people moved there in the late 1800s and early 1900s. For example, in 1900, the town had 1,953 residents. After the 1950s, the population slowly decreased until 2005, when it had 1,501 inhabitants.
Algueña, like Pinoso, was part of the Territory of Orihuela until 1707. Later, when the Bourbon family made changes to how the country was run, Algueña remained in Orihuela's district until 1833. That year, the current system of provinces was created in Spain.
