Ali Mosaffa (Persian: علی مصفا) is a famous Iranian actor, director, and screenwriter. He was born on December 2, 1970, in Tehran, Iran. He has starred in many movies and also directed several of his own films.
Life and Career
Ali Mosaffa grew up in Tehran, Iran. His father, Mozaher Mosaffa, was a well-known Persian poet and a professor at the University of Tehran. His mother, Amir Banoo Karimi, is also a leading expert and professor of Persian literature at the same university. Her father, Seyed Karim Amiri Firuzkuhi, was also a famous Persian poet.
Ali Mosaffa studied Civil engineering at the University of Tehran. While he was there, he discovered his love for acting. He started his acting career in 1991 with the film Omid. The very next year, he won an award for best male actor at the Fajr International Film Festival. This was for his role in Darius Mehrjui's film, Pari.
Mosaffa met his wife, the Iranian actress Leila Hatami, while working on Mehrjui's 1996 film, Leila. They got married in 1999. They have two children: a son named Mani, born in 2003, and a daughter named Assal, born in 2004.
Ali Mosaffa also enjoys directing films. He started by directing short films like Incubus and The Neighbour. He also made a documentary called Farib-e-She'r (The Deceit of Poesy). In 2005, he directed his first feature film, Sima-ye Zani Dar Doordast (also known as Portrait of a Lady Far Away). His wife, Leila Hatami, and Homayoun Ershadi starred in this movie. This film was recognized at The Times BFI London Film Festival. It also won an award at the Chicago Iranian Film Festival.
His second film as a director was The Last Step (Pele ye Akhar). This movie also starred Leila Hatami. It was praised by critics and audiences around the world. At the 2012 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Ali Mosaffa won the FIPRESCI prize for best film. Leila Hatami also won the Crystal Globe for Best Actress for her role in the film.
In 2012, Ali Mosaffa worked with the Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi. He starred in Farhadi's first foreign language film, Le Passé (The Past). This movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
Mosaffa also produces films. He produced his own film, The Last Step. He then produced What's the time in your world, which won an award in 2014. Other films he produced, like A hairy tale and 180 rule, also received awards. He has also worked with French filmmakers to produce movies like Yalda, a Night for Forgiveness and A Tale of Shemroon.
