About Ali Tabatabaee
Ali Tabatabaee was born in Tehran, Iran on February 27, 1973. Before he joined Zebrahead, Ali was a student at UC Irvine. He studied Biology and also took classes in Theater.
After college, he planned to take a year off. During this time, he wanted to prepare for a special test called the MCAT. This test is needed to get into medical school. It was during this break that he started singing with the other members of Zebrahead.
Choosing Music Over Medicine
Ali was accepted into the University of Chicago Medical School. But because Zebrahead was becoming popular, he decided to wait one year before starting medical school.
He once said, "I didn't expect music to go anywhere." He thought he would only do it for a year. But then, he got accepted into medical school and his band was asked to perform for a record label. He had to choose.
After a year, he decided not to go back to medical school. He felt that music was an amazing way to share culture. He believes everyone should try to do what they love for a living. Some of his favorite bands include A Tribe Called Quest and System of a Down.
Facing Challenges
In 1999, while on a music tour called Warped Tour, Ali was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease. This is a type of cancer. He received special treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy to get better.
Even while getting treatment, he kept working with his bandmates. They wrote songs for their album, ... of the Year. A few months before the album came out, he finished his treatment. He says that some songs from that album are very special to him because of what he went through.
Music Collaborations
Ali Tabatabaee also appeared on a DVD for the band Reel Big Fish. He performed on their song "Unity."
Because Zebrahead became very popular in Japan, Ali and his bandmate Matty Lewis were asked by Sega to record a new theme song. This song, called "His World," was for the 2006 video game Sonic The Hedgehog. Ali also helps write most of the songs that Zebrahead performs.
