The MACA museum is a special place for art lovers. It was created in 1976 thanks to Eusebio Sempere. He was an artist who wanted to share modern art with everyone. The museum got a big makeover and reopened in 2011. Now, it has three main collections with about 800 artworks.
What You'll See: The Art Collections
The museum has three permanent collections. This means they are always there, though not all pieces are shown at once.
- 20th-century Art Collection: This collection has famous artworks by artists like Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dalí. It was put together by Eusebio Sempere. He bought many pieces and traded his own art for others. He then gave this amazing collection to the city in 1976.
- Juana Francés Collection: This part of the museum is all about the artist Juana Francés. She was born in Alicante. It includes her paintings, drawings, and other graphic works. Juana Francés left this collection to the city of Alicante when she passed away in 1990.
- Eusebio Sempere Collection: This collection shows many different works by Eusebio Sempere. You can see his gouaches (a type of paint) on paper and even sculptures. The city of Alicante has been collecting his works for this display since 1997.
Not all the artworks from these collections are always on display. For example, only about one-third of the Eusebio Sempere Collection is shown at a time. The museum changes these pieces every three to four months. This way, you can see something new each time you visit!
The Museum Building: A Work of Art Itself
The museum building is also a modern art piece. It was designed by Spanish architects Sol Madridejos and Juan Carlos Sancho. The new design includes the old Casa de la Asegurada. This is the oldest civil building still standing in Alicante. It was built way back in 1685!
The Casa de la Asegurada has a long history. It was first built to store grain. Over the years, it has also been used as a jail. It was even a place to store gunpowder. At one point, it was a school for business. It even served as a temporary City Hall. The original building is a great example of Alicante's baroque style of architecture.
