The Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art (also known as MACA) is a cool museum in Alicante, Spain. It shows off amazing art from the 20th century and today. The museum first opened in 1977. It was created thanks to a famous artist named Eusebio Sempere.

After a big makeover, the museum reopened in 2011. Now, it has three main collections with about 800 pieces of art. The museum is located inside a very old building called the Asegurada building. It's the oldest civil building still standing in Alicante!

Amazing Art Collections

The MACA museum has three special collections that you can explore:

20th-Century Art Collection

This collection is full of incredible art from the 1900s. It includes works by world-famous artists like Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Salvador Dalí. You can also see art by Juan Gris and Julio González. This collection was put together by Eusebio Sempere. He worked hard to buy or trade for these artworks. He then generously gave them to the city of Alicante in 1976.

Juana Francés Collection

This collection features paintings, drawings, and other graphic works. They were all created by Juana Francés, an artist born in Alicante. Juana Francés left her art to the city of Alicante when she passed away in 1990.

Eusebio Sempere Collection

This collection is dedicated to the works of Eusebio Sempere himself. It includes many different types of his art. You can see everything from colorful gouaches (a type of paint) on paper to sculptures. The city of Alicante has been collecting these works since 1997. Not all of Sempere's works are shown at once. About one-third of this collection is displayed, and the artworks are changed every three to four months. This means there's always something new to see!

The Historic Museum Building

The museum building itself is a work of art! It was designed by Spanish architects Sol Madridejos and Juan Carlos Sancho. They made sure the modern design fit well with the original Casa de la Asegurada. This historic part of the building was built way back in 1685. It is the oldest civil building in Alicante.

The Casa de la Asegurada has a long and interesting history. It was first built to store grain. Over the years, it has also been used as a jail and a place to store gunpowder. It even served as a school and, for a short time, as the City Hall. The original building is a great example of Alicante's baroque architecture style.
