Occupation Engineer

Alice Christine Stickland was a brilliant British scientist. She was an engineer and a mathematician. She studied how radio waves travel. She also worked with radar technology.

Early Life

Alice Christine Stickland was born in Camberwell, London. Her birthday was March 16, 1906. Her father worked for a book publisher.

Her Education

Alice loved math and science. She studied mathematics at Kings College in London. She earned her first degree in 1927.

While working, she continued her studies privately. She earned a master's degree in 1929. Later, in 1943, she earned her PhD. Her PhD was about how magnetic waves travel. It focused on how they move near the ground and in the lower air.

Her Career in Science

Alice worked as a scientist for the government. She worked at the Radio Research Station. This was from 1928 to 1947. She worked with important scientists there.

  • She worked with Robert Watson-Watt, who helped invent radar. They studied long radio waves.
  • She worked with Reginald Smith-Rose on short radio waves.
  • She also worked with Edward Appleton. He studied the ionosphere, a part of Earth's atmosphere.

Studying Radio Waves

Alice and Reginald Smith-Rose wrote a paper together. It was about how ultra-short radio waves travel. They shared their findings at a meeting for engineers.

Their paper talked about experiments from 1937 to 1939. They measured radio signals. These signals were sent between Guernsey and Chaldon. This helped them understand how radio waves move.

Later Work and Retirement

Alice officially retired in 1968. But she kept working on important projects. She was the main editor for a series of books. These books were about a special time called the International Years of the Quiet Sun. This was a period when the Sun was very calm.

She also worked with the International Council for Science’s Committee on Space Research (COSPAR). This group helps with space research. Alice was also very involved with the Girl Guides’ Association.
