Alice De Wolf Kellogg (born December 27, 1862 – died February 4, 1900) was an American painter. Her artwork was shown at the important 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.

Early Life and Health

Alice De Wolf Kellogg was born in Chicago, Illinois. She was one of six daughters. From a young age, Alice had a long-term illness that eventually led to her death.

Her father, John, was a doctor who believed in different kinds of medicine. He encouraged Alice to explore various ideas and practices to help her feel better when she struggled with her health.

Women Artists and New Opportunities

In the 1800s, women started getting more chances to study and work. Women artists began forming their own groups. At first, art made by women was sometimes seen as less important.

To change this, women artists became more confident. They worked hard to show how good their art was. This helped create the idea of the "New Woman." This was a modern, educated, and freer woman. Artists like Alice played a big part in showing this new image through their lives and their art.

Education and Art Career

Alice Kellogg studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. She was a very talented student and won the school's top prize. She even started teaching there in 1887.

Later in 1887, she traveled to Europe. She spent time in England and studied art in Paris at famous schools like the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi. She also learned from an American painter named Charles Lasar.

Alice wrote many letters about her experiences. These letters tell us a lot about what it was like for American artists studying in Europe. Today, these letters are kept at the Smithsonian Institution Archives of American Art.

Alice showed her paintings at important art shows in Paris in 1888 and 1889. She also exhibited at the Exposition Universelle of 1889.

The Mother Painting

Alice Kellogg's most famous painting is called The Mother. She painted it in 1889. This painting was shown at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was displayed in the Woman's Building. She also showed other paintings at the Palace of Fine Arts and the Illinois Building at the same event.

The Mother shows a woman holding a sleeping baby. It was a modern take on the classic "Madonna" theme. After this painting was shown in 1891, Alice was invited to join the Society of American Artists. The painting was even featured on the front cover of Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine in 1893.

You can find her artwork in the collection of the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. In 2014, two of her paintings were featured on the TV show Antiques Roadshow. They were valued at $12,000 together.
