Alice Pearl Daiguma Eather (born around 1988 or 1989 – died June 4, 2017) was an amazing Aboriginal Australian woman. She was a talented slam poet, a strong environmental activist, and a dedicated teacher from a place called Maningrida.

Alice Eather: A Champion for Her Community

Alice Eather used her voice and her actions to make a big difference. She fought to protect her land and shared her culture through poetry.

Early Life and Education

Alice was born in Brisbane. Her mother was Helen Djimbarrwala Willams, and her father was Michael Eather, an artist. Michael's family had come to Australia a long time ago on the Second Fleet. Alice grew up and went to school in Brisbane. Later, she moved to Maningrida. There, she became the first Aboriginal teacher who spoke the Ndjebbana language. This was a very important step for her community. She passed away when she was 28 years old.

Protecting Arnhem Land

In 2013, Alice started a group called Protect Arnhem Land. This group was against a process called fracking. Fracking is a way to get oil or gas from the ground. It can sometimes harm the environment. Alice and her group were fighting against a company called Paltar Petroleum. This company wanted to explore for oil in Arnhem Land, which is a special place for Aboriginal people.

Alice's campaign was very successful! She convinced the Northern Territory government to stop the company's plans. They said the company needed to get permission from the local people first. Because of Alice's hard work, Paltar Petroleum eventually gave up their plans in 2016. This was a huge victory for the environment and the local community.

Awards and Recognition

Alice's efforts did not go unnoticed. In 2014, she received the Northern Territory Young Achiever's Environment Award. This award recognized her important work in stopping oil exploration in Arnhem Land. It showed how much her community and others appreciated her dedication.

Poetry and Creativity

Alice was also a gifted poet. She used her poetry to share her thoughts and experiences. She contributed some of her poems to a book called Growing Up Aboriginal In Australia. This book was published in 2018. Alice also appeared on an ABC television show called The Word: Rise of the Slam Poets. This show highlighted the exciting world of slam poetry.
