Alina Bucur facts for kids

Alina Ioana Bucur is a smart mathematician from Romania. She is a professor at the University of California, San Diego. Alina studies something called analytic number theory. This is a part of math that looks at numbers in a special way. She especially focuses on "arithmetic statistics," which is like finding patterns and averages in numbers.

Becoming a Mathematician

Alina Bucur finished her first university studies in University of Bucharest in 2001. After that, she went to Brown University in the United States. There, she earned her Ph.D. in 2006. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get at a university. Her main teacher for this degree was Jeffrey Hoffstein.

After getting her Ph.D., Alina worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. This is a famous place where smart people do research. She was there from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2010. She also taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2006 to 2009.

In 2009, Alina Bucur joined the University of California, San Diego. She started as an assistant professor. In 2016, she became an associate professor. This means she was given "tenure." Tenure is like a permanent job for a professor. It means they can keep teaching and doing research at the university. She went back to the Institute for Advanced Study as a special fellow from 2018 to 2019.

Helping Women in Math

Alina Bucur cares a lot about helping other women who study math. She has been part of a group called the Women in Numbers (WIN) Network since it started. This group helps women mathematicians connect and work together. She is on the WIN Steering Committee, which helps guide the group.

She also helped organize several events for women in math. These include:

Awards and Honors

In 2012–2013, Alina Bucur received the Hellman Faculty Fellow award. The University of California, San Diego gives this award. It helps new professors with their research as they work towards getting tenure.

In 2021, Alina was named a fellow of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). This is a big honor! She received it because she has done so much to support women in math. She helps them at her own university, across the country, and even around the world. She organizes many important meetings and workshops to help women succeed in mathematics.
